Getting an error code while gaming is bad enough, but getting a vague code like “Something went wrong Error Code 0x80070490” is useless.

Whether you’re playing on Windows 10, Windows 11, or an Xbox console, we’ll help you understand this Xbox error code, what might cause it, how to avoid it, and what to do if it happens.

Understanding Error Code 0x80070490

We’ve often seen this error code complained about on forums and other places gamers gather to voice their grievances, such as social media. While we have no way of knowing how widespread the issue is, it comes up often enough that we think it’s relatively common.

This error relates to game installations, update errors, and corrupted game data. There are broadly two situations where this error seems to pop up:

  • On Xbox: When accessing Xbox Live services, downloading games, updating games, or even system updates.
  • On Microsoft Windows PC: This error appears when using the Xbox App in Windows, usually when trying to access Game Pass titles, or modify them in some way, such as updates or downloads. It indicates an issue with the System Component Store or the Component-Based Servicing (CBS) developing file corruption.

Since the Xbox is essentially a Windows system, many potential solutions to this issue cover both Windows and Xbox, and we’ll indicate what system each fix is for below.

Disable Antivirus (Windows)

If you have a third-party antivirus package on your Windows PC (i.e., not Windows Defender), you can try disabling it if you’re trying to play a game through the Xbox app or the Windows Store.

We don’t recommend turning off your antivirus, but rather that you test whether it might be interfering with the game. You have two options if the error goes away with your antivirus off.

You can try switching to a different antivirus solution or refer to your antivirus documentation to see how you can exclude a specific program from being scanned or monitored by the software. This prevents its data from being corrupted while in memory.

Power Cycle Your Xbox or Restart Your PC

As usual, the first troubleshooting step we want to do is restart these devices in case of a temporary glitch that will right itself with a fresh start. You can restart your PC as usual, but for Xbox unplug the console’s power cable (or power cord, if you prefer) from the wall for a proper shutdown. Next, wait a minute, and then start it up again.

Verify Game Files (Windows)

The Windows Xbox app offers a method to repair corrupt game files without deleting and redownloading the game. This is especially useful if you’re trying to play games from external USB drives since power outages caused by unplugging the drive can suddenly lead to data corruption.

In the Xbox App in Windows, go to My Library > [Name of Game] > More Options (…) > Manage.

Delete and Reinstall Games (Xbox and Windows)

If only some games are giving this error, try deleting that game and downloading it from scratch. If you have a game installed on external storage (such as a hard drive), transfer it back to your console’s internal storage before trying it again.

Update Your Xbox or Xbox App (Xbox and Windows)

On Windows, there are two apps related to Xbox and Game Pass games. The obvious one is the Xbox app, but it’s actually just a front end for the Microsoft Store App. If anything goes wrong with the Store App, the Xbox app in Windows won’t work correctly, in our experience.

The answer is to head to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and install any Windows updates. This might update the Windows Store app or other Windows components that may be causing issues.

The Xbox App usually tells you if it has a pending update, but sometimes, you’ll have to restart your computer or force-close the app in Task Manager. Then, start the app up again with a working internet connection, and the update prompt should appear.

To check for pending updates for your Xbox console, press the Xbox button to bring up the guide, then go to Profile & System > Your Account Name > Settings > System > Updates and Downloads.

Here, you can check if updates are available and install them.

Delete and Reinstall Apps (Windows)

If the Windows Store and Xbox Apps are not updating and you keep getting this error, you can uninstall and reinstall them.

The Xbox app can be uninstalled from the usual place where all Windows apps live. Search for “Add or Remove Programs” in the Start Menu and open the result. You’ll find the Xbox app in the list of programs.

Things aren’t so simple for the Windows Store. It’s a core Windows component, so you can’t remove it in the traditional sense. However, we’ve got you covered. For detailed instructions, head over to How to Reinstall Microsoft Store in Windows.

Factory Reset Your Xbox

Consoles don’t give us as many options to fix problems as PCs since most technical stuff is hidden away, and we can’t mess with it. This means that the nuclear option of a full factory reset to fix this issue comes up sooner than it does on the PC.

Before you do a factory reset, ensure your save games are all synced with the cloud. You can also move games to external storage to avoid downloading them again. Disconnect all your external storage, and then proceed with the factory reset. If you don’t know how to factory reset your console, head over to How To Factory Reset an Xbox One or Xbox Series X.

Verify and Repair Windows

Sometimes Windows system files or Windows update components get corrupted and also cause issues where the OS can’t self-correct. To rectify this you may want to delete all Windows updates, but if that doesn’t work you’ll have to use the Windows Troubleshooter, or use tools such as DISM or SFC to ensure all Windows components are working correctly.

You can use all of these tools by following our How to Repair Windows 11 to Fix Problems guide, which will walk you through how to use them.

Reinstall Windows

This is where you’ll have to make a difficult decision about just how much you want to play those Game Pass games. It seems like many people who struggle with the 0x80070490 error have only been able to resolve it by wiping their computers and reinstalling their operating system from scratch.

Now, this is a pretty drastic measure, and you should make 100% sure that you have some form of backup before you do it. The only alternative is to wait for an Xbox App patch to fix the problem, but there’s no guarantee one will ever come.

If you’ve tried everything else and have the time and inclination to go through with it, refer to our guide on how to wipe and reinstall Windows.

Play the Cloud Version

While this is not a solution, if you just want to get into the game and don’t want to spend time troubleshooting an issue that might resolve itself, you can try playing your game using cloud streaming. Not all games are available through Microsoft’s cloud streaming service. For example, while Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends can be played over the cloud, Mincradt itself is not available at the time of writing.

As long as you have moderately good internet, you can run games over the cloud, and you’re not even restricted to your console. You can stream to the Xbox app on mobile devices or the Xbox app for Smart TVs.

Contact Xbox Support

Fixing errors like this can sometimes lead to a situation where there just doesn’t seem to be a solution. At this point, you’ll have to contact Xbox support and ask them to help fix Error Code 0x80070490.
