Adventure games are one of the most popular video game genres, no matter what console you’re playing on. If you’re an Xbox gamer, there are some genuinely epic titles to get stuck into. We’ve rounded up 8 of the best Xbox adventure games for you.

Whether you’re into games where your choices shape the story or prefer post-apocalyptic open-world adventure games, there’s something on this list for everyone.

1. Quantum Break

We’re kicking off with one of the older titles on this list, Remedy Entertainment’s Quantum Break, released in 2016. To date, it’s one of the best Xbox adventure games we’ve played, though this time, there’s no crossover with other Remedy games like Alan Wake and Control. Fans of Uncharted looking for a similar experience on Xbox will love this time-travel adventure game.

The game’s protagonist, Jack Joyce, played by Shawn Ashmore, has returned to his hometown to help his brother. But time is breaking down, and you have the power to manipulate it, making everything around you freeze while you can continue on your way. Take down a shadowy time-travel corporation on a mission to stabilize time before it fractures completely.

Quantum Break breaks up the story with immersive live-action TV show segments that are pretty compelling to view and make you feel like you’re part of the game. It’s available for Xbox One only and is included with Game Pass.

2. Stray

Have you ever wanted to explore the world as a cute cat? The mysterious, robot-filled city of Stray offers that with beautiful graphics and an immersive world. You’re a stray cat who tumbles into a walled cybercity and must explore to find your way out. There are plenty of mysteries to uncover, characters to meet, and, of course, rugs and walls to scratch—after all, you are a fluffy cat.

Developed by BlueTwelve Studio and published by Annapurna Interactive, Stray was released in 2022 and is available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles.

If we have any criticism of Stray, it’s that it’s so short. To complete the story, expect around five hours of gameplay and around ten hours if you’re aiming for 100% completion.

3. Bramble: The Mountain King

Bramble: The Mountain King was one of the most surprising and beautiful games we played on Xbox in 2023, so make sure to add it to your list if you haven’t yet played it. This Nordic horror adventure game is available for Xbox One and next-gen Xbox consoles.

You play as Olle, a young boy searching for his missing sister Lillemor, whom creatures from Scandinavian mythology have kidnapped. In this third-person game, you’ll need to solve puzzles, battle terrifying bosses, and explore gorgeously rendered fairytale worlds, complete with a haunting soundtrack.

Bramble: The Mountain King is a game that’s simultaneously filled with wonder and horror, and although it’s short at around four and a half hours to complete the story, it’s a satisfying experience.

4. As Dusk Falls

The first thing to note about As Dusk Falls is its interesting visual aesthetics and art style. This interactive drama is available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, and it’s also included with Xbox Game Pass. Prefer to play your Xbox games on PC? Check out our guide to how to play Xbox Game Pass games on PC.

The game explores the lives of two families across thirty years, commencing in 1998. Branching narrative decisions move the story forward according to your choices, and you can review your choices at the end of each chapter, so no two playthroughs will be the same. If the game feels similar to Quantic Dream titles like Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls, that’s because creative director Caroline Marchal worked as a designer on both games.

There’s a multiplayer component to As Dusk Falls, too, giving it even more replay value beyond making different choices the next time.

5. Fallout 4

With the new Fallout series coming to Amazon in the spring, there’s no time like the present to revisit Fallout 4 or play it for the first time if you’ve never experienced it.

This 2015 open-world adventure game is available for Xbox One and is backward compatible with Xbox Series X and S consoles, so you can play it on any console. It’s also available on Game Pass.

Set in post-apocalyptic Boston and its surrounds, you play the sole survivor of Vault 111. Awakening from cryogenic sleep, you find your son is missing and your wife murdered. It’s up to you to find your son, but you’ll need to explore a vast, dangerous wasteland, interact with various insalubrious characters, craft settlements, armor, weapons, and more.

Featuring some of the best character customization at the time — which still stands up pretty well to newer releases — Fallout 4 is a game that will take you over 150 hours to beat if you’re going for 100 completion. The story alone is over 25 hours long, making it worth the investment.

6. The Wolf Among Us

Fans of Telltale’s The Walking Dead series and narrative adventures will love The Wolf Among Us. The Wolf Among Us is an episodic graphic adventure with five episodes in the same art style as The Walking Dead games. It was released in 2013 for Xbox One and Xbox 360 and is also backward compatible with Xbox Series X/S.

Based on the comic series Fable, The Wolf Among Us sees a world where characters from folklore and fairytales inhabit alongside humans. You play as Fabletown’s sheriff, Bigby Wolf, who is tasked with investigating several murders.

Throughout the game, your choices will influence the story and your relationships with other characters as you navigate the dark fairytale world and face moral dilemmas. If you love immersive storytelling, this game grabs your attention from the outset.

7. BioShock Infinite: The Complete Edition

Whether you’ve played the first two games or not, BioShock Infinite is a whole new chapter. This first-person shooter adventure game lets you explore the flying city of Columbia on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Set in 1912, you take on the role of Booker DeWitt, a hired gun tasked with rescuing Elizabeth, a girl who’s been held captive in the Sky City since birth. Use skylines to zip through the city at high speed, shoot lightning and reign murders of crows down upon your enemies, and even tear rips in time to aid your escape.

Once you’ve finished the game, you’ll unlock BioShock Infinite’s 1999 Mode, an extra challenge designed for hardcore gamers who want 100% completion.

8. Last Stop

We’re finishing our list with Last Stop, one of the best Xbox adventure games we played in 2023. You can play the game on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. There isn’t any other game that this compares to, though if we had to name one, the supernatural adventure is probably closest to something like Oxenfree.

Set in present-day London, this very British adventure is actually three interwoven tales featuring three playable characters: John, a workaholic 40-something single dad; Donna, a high schooler fed up with her home life and looking for thrills; and Meena, who will stop at nothing to ensure professional success but just can’t quite feel the same happiness at home with her family as she does in her job.

Throw in supernatural elements like cursed artifacts and mysterious basement happenings alongside fantastic storytelling and full voice acting. You have one of the best narrative adventure games you’ll play this year.

We hope you’ve enjoyed reading our picks for the best Xbox adventure games and found something you haven’t already played. If you need any more gaming inspiration, why not check out our roundup of the top 14 fighting games for Xbox?
