Survival games and horror games all have their place but sometimes you just want to get stuck into the top Xbox Series S/X and Xbox One war games, whether you’re playing a solo campaign or battling with friends in multiplayer mode. Whether you’re into epic, historically accurate WWII battles, free-to-play battle royale titles, or stealthy sniper contracts, we’ve rounded up the top war games to play on Xbox.

1. Arma Reforger

Soliders battle in Arma Reforger.

Released in 2022, Bohemia Interactive’s most recent installation in the Arma Reforger series tops our list as one of the top Xbox war games thanks to its realism. Become immersed in detailed military simulations, explore expansive maps, and experience realistic warfare set on the remote island of Arland during the Cold War. With a variety of mission objectives to tackle, Arma Reforger’s gameplay is challenging, focusing on tactics and teamwork to overcome obstacles. Play alone or enjoy multiplayer mode with up to 63 others. Game Master mode even lets you edit your scenarios in real time.

Arma Reforger is available to play on Xbox Series X/S.

2. Hell Let Loose

First-person shooter action in Hell Let Loose.

This 50v50 multiplayer game sees you take part in some of history’s most iconic large-scale battles, from Omaha Beach to Stalingrad. Fight across a wide variety of environments with a choice of 14 roles across Command, Recon, Armor, and Infantry unit types. Whether you prefer to play as a Spotter, Officer, Tank Commander, Medic, or another role, this is realistic World War II combat at its finest, with intricately detailed historical armor, weapons, and vehicles.

With meticulously crafted to-scale maps created using real satellite and aerial imagery of battle locations and immersive visuals, you’ll need to focus on teamwork and manage supplies and resources to survive, not to mention making tactical decisions on where best to defend or attack.

You can play Hell Let Loose on Xbox Series X/S and PC, and it’s included with Xbox Game Pass.

3. Insurgency: Sandstorm

Soldiers watch an explosion in Insurgency: Sandstorm.

This tactical FPS is one of the best Xbox One war games, and it’s a must-play if you want modern-day, realistic firefights and close-quarters combat. Play with others in intense coop mode or battle to the death in competitive multiplayer mode with up to 20 players in PVP matches. Released in 2021, Insurgency Sandstorm may be a few years old now. Still, the stunning visuals, realistic ballistics, and character and weapon customization help keep it fresh as a modern-day war game. You’ll need to think strategically and work together, and even then, victory isn’t guaranteed.

Included with Xbox Game Pass, Insurgency: Sandstorm is available to play on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

4. Enlisted

Firing on the enemy in Enlisted.

If you prefer your war games with a historical setting, you can dive into realistic World War II battles with Enlisted, available for free on Xbox Series X/S. This squad-based first-person MMO shooter sees you participate in key battles from the era, where you’ll control a squad of soldiers with their roles, from riflemen to snipers and radio operators. Or, you can choose to play as an aircraft pilot or military vehicle crew.

Battle on land, in the air, and at sea, and directly control one soldier while the others move according to your orders. Your tactical decisions and plans matter in these massive battles, and if you fail, you’ll respawn in the next available squad. Enlisted is a must-play for fans of historical war games and still holds up even though it’s a few years old now.

5. Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2

A sniper looks through their sights in Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2.

For those who enjoy stealthier war games, Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 ticks all the right boxes. Take on deadly contracts and take out targets over 1,000m away with long-range sniping. Set in the Middle East, the single-player campaign sees you play as Raven, a Contract Sniper Assassin. Explore the expansive map with its lush green oases and stunning temples, and take down the criminal syndicate headed by Mahmoud Zarza, “The Butcher.”

With realistic weapon mechanics, a wide range of mission objectives, and an engaging storyline, Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 is a must-play for war game enthusiasts.

It is available to play on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

6. Call of Duty: Vanguard

Battling the undead in Call of Duty Vanguard's zombie mode.

Grab the Call of Duty: Vanguard Cross-Gen Bundle, and you’ll get access to both the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game, as well as some tempting extras. With a huge single-player campaign, you can dive into realistic, engaging World War Two combat across the globe, from North Africa to Eastern and Western Europe. Multiplayer mode lets you play with friends and explore more than 20 maps.

Don’t forget about zombie mode, either! Set in the ruins of 1944 Stalingrad, the story follows on from the Dark Aether story in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War as undead soldiers rise from their graves — and you can take them on with friends in four-person co-op mode.

7. Isonzo

First-person shooter Isonzo's Italian mountain views.

Isonzo comes from Black Mill Games, the studio behind Tannenberg and Verdun. Set during World War One in the Italian mountains, the game recreates historical battles such as the Strafexpedition in fantastic detail, covering a massive range of shifting landscapes, from city center streets to mountainous fortresses.

Think tactically and plan your moves strategically, whether that’s using sniper shields or laying wire and sandbags to ensure victory is within your grasp. The game’s attention to detail is impressive, with everything from uniforms to trenches and houses painstakingly recreated based on historical research and field trips by the dev team. With over 30 WWI weapons to choose from, this is Alpine warfare at its bloodiest and best.

Isonzo is available to play on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

8. Tannenberg

Fighting from the trenches in Tannenberg.

We already mentioned Tannenberg, and Black Mill Games hit the ball out of the park with this sequel to Verdun, with a truly realistic depiction of the Eastern Front during the First World War. Tannenberg is one of the older games on our list, but it still holds up, with over 50 weapons, nine expansive maps, and seven squads, ensuring there’s much to explore and plenty of replay value in this first-person shooter. Take on enemies in your four-man squad across the mountains and lakes of the Eastern Front and play in 40-player game mode with full AI bot support, so you don’t need your friends around to enjoy full-scale epic battles!

Tannenberg is available to play on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S and is one of the best Xbox One war games out there, hands down.

9. Call of Duty: Warzone

Soldiers cross water in a boat in Call of Duty: Warzone.

We’re finishing our list with another Call of Duty game, and for good reason. Call of Duty: Warzone is free to play on Xbox Series X/S, and it’s the ultimate battle royale experience for war game enthusiasts. With season 2 released in February 2024 and new maps and weapons dropping semi-regularly, there’s plenty to explore. Battle across the desert region of Al Marzah with 18 different POIs, fight against over 400 AI enemies and up to 100 players in DMZ mode and enjoy the Walking Dead crossover from February 25, 2024. True, it’s a complex game that isn’t the easiest to get into for newbies, but once you’re in, it’s quickly going to take up a lot of your gaming time.

We hope this roundup of the top war games to play on Xbox has given you an idea of which war game you’ll be playing next and which ones to add to your list for the future. While you’re here, why not check out our roundup of the top fighting games for Xbox?
