Xbox console and two controllers.

If your Xbox won’t update, you may see an error code or message while the update is installing, or after installation. In the worst-case scenario, your console may not start correctly once the update is complete. If you’re wondering, “Why won’t my Xbox update?” we’ll show you 8 fixes to try.

If you’re seeing any of the following error codes, work through the below steps until the issue is resolved.

8007019x, 80072xxx, 8019019x, or 87DDxxxx

E100, E200, E204, E207, E102, E106, E203, E208, E305

1. Try Installing the System Update Again Later

If you see the error message “There was a problem with the update” along with error code 8B05003 and your Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One won’t update, this means that the update is not currently available and could mean there’s an issue with the Xbox servers. Try installing the system update again later to see if this resolves the problem.

2. Restart Your Console

Turning it off and then on again is an old fix, but a solid one. Try restarting your console to see if the system update installs successfully. Hopefully, this will resolve your issue.

3. Check Your Network Connection

The error message “There was a problem with the update” followed by error codes 8007019x, 80072xxx, 8019019x, or 87DDxxxx could point to a network or caching problem. This could happen during or after a system update. To check your network connection, follow the below steps:

  1. Open the guide by pressing the Xbox button on your controller.
  2. Go to Profile and System > Settings > General > Network Settings.
  3. You should see any known outages under Current Network Status.
  4. Choose Test Network Connection.
  5. If the connection test is successful, try installing the system update again.
  6. If the connection test is unsuccessful, you’ll need to troubleshoot your connection.
  7. Once connectivity is restored, you can install the system update again.
Test Xbox network connectivity.

4. Power Cycle Your Console

If you see any of the error codes above (800719x, 80072xxx, 8019019x, or 87DDxxxx) alongside “There was a problem with the update” and your network connectivity seems fine, the next step is to try power cycling your console. You might also want to power cycle your Xbox if it’s stuck on the startup animation screen following an update

  1. Press and hold the Xbox button on your console for approximately ten seconds.
  2. Once the console has shut down, unplug the power cord and wait for 30 seconds.
  3. Then, plug everything back in and press the Xbox button again to turn your console back on.
  4. Try installing the system update again after the console restarts to see if the issue is resolved.

5. Perform an Offline System Update

If you see any of the error codes above (800719x, 80072xxx, 8019019x, or 87DDxxxx) alongside “There was a problem with the update,” and you’ve checked your network connectivity, and power cycled your console to no avail, you can try performing an offline system update. You might also want to try this if your console is stuck on a black screen after powering it on. It’s recommended to wait ten minutes to see if this resolves itself, and if not, you can try an offline system update.

You’ll need a USB flash drive with a minimum 6GB of available space formatted as NTFS and a Windows PC with internet connectivity and a USB port. Hopefully, this will resolve the issue.

6. Free up Storage Space on Your Xbox

If you see the error message “Your Xbox is almost full” on the time to update screen, you’ll need to free up space on your console to download content updates for games and apps. Note that this isn’t associated with system updates but only updates for games and apps you already have installed on your console. Here’s how to free up storage space:

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller.
  2. Choose My Games and Apps.
  3. Select See All.
  4. Highly any content you want to remove and press the Menu button on your controller.
  5. Select Uninstall.
  6. Try to restart the content update by relaunching the app or game.
Free up storage space on Xbox.

7. Factory Reset Your Xbox

If your console has been stuck on a black screen at startup but eventually starts working, it’s a good idea to factory reset your Xbox. It’s also a good move to do this if any of the above fixes aren’t working for you or if you see error code E105 after trying to update your system.

Note: Factory resetting your Xbox will erase your accounts, apps, games, settings, and any saved games that haven’t been synced to the cloud.

8. Get Your Xbox Repaired

When all else fails, and none of the above fixes are working, it’s time to get your Xbox repaired. You can get in touch with Microsoft to get your Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S serviced or repaired.

Xbox One Error Codes

Error codes for Xbox One may vary. You may see a System Error message with Exxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx across the bottom of your screen following a system update. Find the first three digits following the E — that’s your error code.

For E102 error code: You’ll need to factory reset your console.

For E101, E203, or E305 error codes: You’ll need to send your Xbox to be repaired or serviced.

For E200, E204, E206, or E207 error codes: Try power cycling your console to see if the issue is resolved.

As you can see, there are plenty of error codes that could appear when your Xbox won’t update. However, there’s no need to panic, as there are several fixes to try no matter what error code appears on your screen. Hopefully, one of these fixes has resolved the problem with your Xbox not updating, so you can get back to playing the top Xbox survival games or fighting games.
